He was born Nov. 10, 1937, in Jefferson County, a son of the late Frank Arthur Hankins and Vidalia Reynolds Hankins. He was reared and received his education at Glendale, where he was a graduate of Glendale High School. He attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where he received his degree in agricultural engineering in 1959. He was employed at International Paper Company for 30 years and retired as a mechanical engineer in 1993. He was a member of Olive Street Missionary Baptist Church. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Dan Hankins. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Margaret Claudette Jacks Hankins, whom he married on May 30, 1958, at Pine Bluff; a son, Raymond Hankins of Pine Bluff; three daughters, Karen McPherson of Grady, Connie Blackmon of Bentonville and Amy Carle of Marsan, France; two sisters, Regina Linzy of Woodlawn and Avenia Reynolds of White Hall; and 13 grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors with Mark Tolbert and the Rev. Curtis Brown officiating. Burial will be in Harmony Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Research Notes: Obituary: Bernard Julian Atkins, 85, of 4286 Oak Level Rd., Bassett, died Thursday, Aug.4, 2005. Born July 18, 1920, in Bassett, Atkins was the son of the late Lewis E. Atkins and Lavinie Mitchell Atkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ferrell E. Atkins and half-sisters, Blanch Bellecci and Margaret Benson. Atkins served in the Navy Armed Guard during World War II as a gunner's mate on the SS William H. Moody and the SS Pocahantas. He later was a retired supervisor from American of Martinsville. Atkins also was a member of Fort Trial Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and in the Fellowship Sunday School class and Senior adult group. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mabel Spencer Atkins of the home; a son, B. Jerry Atkins of Bassett; a brother, James C. "Jack" Atkins of Richmond; one grandchild; one step-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held today at 2 p.m. at Fort Trial Baptist Church with Dr. Joey McNeill and the Rev. She had lived her entire life in the Brosville community and worked as a seamstress for many years. She was retired from Riverside Health Care Center where she worked as activities director. After she retired, she continued as a volunteer with classes and activities. She was also a member of the Senior Citizen’s Quilting Club and served as a volunteer at the Stonewall Special Population Center. She was a charter member of the Welcome Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for a number of years. Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three sons, Lonnie W. Haymore and Randall E. Haymore both of Danville and Melvin A. Haymore of Cascade; six sisters, Edna Mitchell, Betty Loeb, Linda Turner, Joyce Gryder, Virginia Murphy all of Danville, and Mary Fitch of Middle River, M.D.; three brothers, Raymond Hyler of Reeling, Herman Hyler and Bobby A. Hyler Jr. both of Danville; and three grandchildren. She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by two brothers, William S. Hyler and Terrance B. Hyler. He also coached T-ball at Union Hall Elementary School. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Stacy Kellam Merricks of the home; three daughters, Macie Ann Merricks, Skyler Marie Merricks and Jacie Alexandria Lewis, all of the home; one son, Cory Scott Merricks of the home; one stepsister; one stepbrother; maternal grandmother, Macie Haskins Merricks of Callands and special friends, Dwayne Rigney and Amanda Rigney. Moore was born in Martinsville on Sept. 21, 1933, to Lillie Gray Minter and George D. Moore Jr. He joined the Air Force at age 17 and served in Texas and Greenland during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Richmond and taught school before entering the jewelry business, working his way up to marketing director of the former chain, The Jewel Box Corp. He also worked as the marketing director for Victor Kiam with Wells Benerous and then started his own company, Concept Marketing Inc., in 1973. He developed one of the first one-step ear piercing instruments in the 1970s; was the first in the jewelry industry to plate gold directly onto surgical steel, and made the name brand Concepts allergy free earrings. He participated in local and international sailing races including the Newport to Bermuda race, and he was a member of the winning team on the Stormy Petrel in the Miami to Montego Bay race. Born Sept. 25, 1948, in Pittsylvania Co., he was the son of Anne Reynolds Coward and the late Melvin Coward. He was of the Baptist faith and was a computer analyst for Lorillard Tobacco Co. He was married to Katherine Nelson Coward. In addition to his mother, of Callands and his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Daniel Coward of Roanoke and Joshua Coward of the residence; two brothers, Tony Coward of Martinsville and Perry Coward of Danville. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15 at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment will be at County Line Christian Church cemetery in Axton.
