According to Mary Bishop, mbishop.bishop@mindspring.com: James Russell "Indian Jim" Sutton's mother was a full blooded Cherokee Indian. It's unknown at this time if Martha Tipton was his mother, or if John also had another wife or mistress who was Cherokee.

Martha married John C. Sutton, son of James D. Sutton and Elizabeth Rauch, on Aug 7, 1831 in Madison Co., MO.⁵ (John C. Sutton was born in 1806 in Georgia or North Carolina ⁵ and died on Sep 19, 1894 in Grant, Marshall Co., AL ^5,44.) The cause of his death was Apoplexy (heart failure).
