bullet  General Notes:

George served with the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War. He was in Capt Young's Company, of the Alabama Niter & Mining Corps. Niter is a word for Potassium Nitrate or Sodium Nitrate; especially Chili Saltpeter. This chemical was critical in the making of gun power. The area of Alabama where George lived had an abundance of Saltpeter and one of the places near his home there is a place called "Saltpeter Cave".

Another researcher (John Barras) indicates that the above reference to George's Confederate Army service may be wrong because: The record I have shows George W. Burroughs as a private in Co. F of the 25 Alabama Infantry. The rosters for the 25th Alabama also lists two other Burroughs which I believe are a younger and older brother. 25,75

bullet  Research Notes:

George is listed as head-of-household in the 1880 Census, Randolph Co., Alabama, Flatrock, E.D. 111, family #236, June 17: George W. Burroughs, 46, farmer, born in Georgia, parents born in North Carolina; Caroline L., 38, wife, keeping house, born in Georgia, father born in Tennessee, mother born in Georgia; Elizabeth M., 20, dau., at home; Martha C., 19, dau., at home; William T., 18, son, works on farm; Louetta, 16, dau., at home; Isaac R., 13, son, works on farm; Wyatt M., 3, son; Dock Elder, 2, son; all the children were born in Alabama.

George is listed as head-of-household in the 1900 Census, Marshall Co., Alabama, Wrights Precinct #3, family #45: George W. Burroughs, 66 (Aug 1833), married 42 years, born in Georgia, parents born in North Carolina; Susan C., 59 (Nov 1840), wife, married 42 years, 6 of 8 children living, born in Georgia, father born in Tennessee, mother born in Georgia; Martha, 40 (Mar 1860), dau., single; Joseph L., 21 (Mar 1878), grandson, single, parents born in Alabama. Martha and Joseph were born in Alabama.

The source for his middle name of Washington isn't certain, and the 1850 census seems to indicate that it is wrong. In the 1880 and 1900 census, he lists both of his parents as born in North Carolina. In the 1850 census, of all the Burroughs found, there is only one, born about 1833, in Georgia, whose parents were born in North Carolina, and coincidentally, also living in Randolph Co., Alabama; this child is William Burroughs. Thus, it's possible that his name is George WIlliam vice Washington. However, he does have a younger brother named George H., and this is a strong indication that it is a different family because it's unlikely that parents would name two children George. 71
