Another researcher indicates that Joseph's 1st wife was Ann or Lucy Pruitt, whereas a researcher on the Austin Family Association of America indicates that possibly his 1st wife's maiden name was Terry. It is known that his 2nd wife was Wealthy Prewitt, so possibly that is where the confusion lies, but in any case, the identity of Joseph's 1st wife isn't certain.
However, Wealthy Prewitt (later spelled Pruitt) had two sisters, Ann & Lucy Pruitt. This is too coincidental to be disregarded. I have thus listed Joseph's 1st wife as Ann (or Lucy) Pruitt, sister of his 2nd wife, Wealthy. Thus, in his 1st marriage, to Wealthy's sister, Wealthy was having a relationship with her brother-in-law, to which two children were born. I selected Ann, over Lucy, as his 1st wife because Ann was born about 1742, making her about age 16-18 when she would have married in about 1760, whereas her sister, Lucy, was from 14-16 at that time.
The following is a likely scenario that explains much of the confusion associated with her sister Wealthy's two children who were born out of wedlock, and why Joseph, in his Will, gave them a full-share of his inheritance (verifying that they were his blood heirs). To wit:
Joseph lived next door to the Prewitts/Pruitts. He was probably seeing both Wealthy and her younger sister Ann [We know from Joseph's Will that Wealthy's two illegitimate children received a full-share, and at that time, those words mean that they were the blood descendants of Joseph, and were definitely not adopted.]. Undoubtedly, Wealthy got pregnant, and for whatever the reason, they either broke-up because of it, or at least decided not to get married. Joseph then decided to see Ann, and they married in about 1760, and had their 1st child in 1761. Joseph & Ann probably lived close to his & her parents, and Wealthy would have been a regular visitor with her illegitimate daughter, Fannie.
Joseph & Ann had their 2nd child in 1764, and it's about this time that Joseph & Wealthy had some occasion to probably see each other discreetly and discussed what had happened to them and, now, their illegitimate child. Joseph probably told Wealthy that he would look after their daughter's welfare, and this rekindled something they once shared, and since Wealthy's 2nd illigitimate son was born 1865, it's very likely that it was at this meeting that they became intimate again and Wealthy got pregnant a 2nd time, and had a son in 1865.
Wealthy was taken to court for having bastard children, so apparently she did not reveal the father's name, and neither did Joseph (the father) until his Will was probated.
Joseph & Ann had three more children before she died in 1776, at age 34, from what may have been complications from childbirth. And, about a year later, Joseph then married Wealthy. Obviously, no one knew that Joseph was the father of Wealthy's two illigitimate children, and in all probability, the two children spent a lot of time with Joseph & Ann, and he probably treated them as his own. Thus, when Joseph & Wealthy married, it was no shock that her two illegitimate children were gladly welcomed by Joseph. Joseph & Wealthy then lived a normal life with probably no one being the wiser about the father of Wealthy's two illegitimate children until Joseph made his Will.
