Her orig. death cert. claims the Austin surname, and also claims therein to have "never married". The only window for either marriage, or common-law marriage status, is before he married Mary Estelle Sink in about 1954. He's listed as never married in both the 1940, living hin household of his parents, and 1950 census', in his own household with only his father and 2-nephews living with him.
In the 1940 census, a Burnice D. McGhee, 18, inmate, single, born Franklin Co., Va., is living in Ivakota Farm, Centerville, Fairfax Co., Va. Ivakota Farm was a Progressive Reform School, and home for unwed mothers and their children. This entry sheds light on her claiming the Austin name on her orig. death cert. As an inmate there, she's either an unwed expecting mother, or mother. A child isn't listed with her, so she apparently was pregnant before marriage, or is expecting at the time of the 1940 census, and/or later either miscarriaged or had a child, but no record of that has been found. She could have married Lewis M. Austin after leaving Ivakota Farm to sometime in the early 1950s, but that doesn't seem to have happened, since he was still single in the 1950 census.
