bullet  Research Notes:

Zerah is listed as head-of-household in the 1900 Census, Marshall Co., Alabama, Hooper, family #51, June 5: Zerah Sparks, 43 (Jun 1857), married 25 years, farmer, father born in South Carolina, self & mother born in Alabama; Mary M., 42 (May 1858), married 25 years, 12 of 12 children living; Thomas Y., 23 (Jan 1876), son, married 1 year, farm labor; William A., 20 (Dec 1879), son, single, farm labor; Nancy E., 16 (May 1884), dau., single; Alford, 14 (Jan 1886), son, farm labor; Silus, 12 (Feb 1888), son, farm labor; Eva A., 11 (Jan 1889), dau., at school; Viola, 9 (May 1891), dau., at school; Annie B., 6 (Jun 1893), dau.; Emma, 5 (May 1895), dau.; Ag, 2 (Aug 1897), son; Ida, 22 (Aug 1877), dau.-in-law, parents born in Tennessee; all except where listed otherwise were born in Alabama.

Note: The 1900 Census shows them both married 25 years, with Mary having 12 of 12 children living. However only 10 children are listed, and the oldest child Thomas was born in Jan 1876. Their marriage date is given as May 17, 1875, so Thomas was born about 8 months after their marriage. There are two children unaccounted for that are living, that aren't accounted for; they are probably two daughters born early 1877 and mid 1882 because there are two about 3-year gaps available after Thomas, and after William that are reasonable periods to account for these two children. The eldest could be either a girl or boy, but the younger is surely a girl because boys didn't marry at such a young age. 82
