bullet  Research Notes:

The 1850 census names him as James T., but erroneously lists him as female.

James is listed as head-of-household in the 1870 Census, Guntersville, Alabama, family #367, July 7: James T. Sparks, 38, farmer, real estate / property valued at $200 / $300, born in South Carolina; Marcella, 36, keeping house; William L., 14; Zerah Tho., 11; John H., 9; Nancy A., 6; Mary M., 4; Henry V., 3; Louisa E., 1; Earline Westly, 25; all but James were born in Alabama. Note: Zerah, Henry and Ezekiel (born 1876) are all known to have lived well into the 20th century; the 1900 Census says that 2 of their 8 children are dead by Jun 5, 1900.

In the 1880 census he is living in the household of his son, John H. Sparks. He is 49, married, and the town Marshall, however, his wife isn't listed in the household, but his daughter Mollie, 15, single, and son's James, 6, and Ezekiel, 3, are listed with him.

James is listed as head-of-household in the 1900 Census, Marshall Co., Alabama, Hooper, family #60, June 5: James Sparks, 67 (Nov 1831), married 45 years, self & parents born in South Carolina; Lucie M., 60 (Apr 1840), married 45 years, 6 of 8 children living, born in Alabama, parents born in North Carolina; Emma Dillard, 10 (Jul 1889), lodger, self & parents born in Alabama.

His tombstone shows that he was a Lieutenant in Company C, 49th Alabama Infantry, Confederate States of America. His tombstone is obviously a memorial marker that replaced his original stone, thus, it's possible that the given information isn't accurate. Another source indicates that he was a Captain in the Army, so either is a possibility regardless of what the tombstone says.
