This marriage seems obvious in the 1870 census, but could be wrong. James is listed as the head-of-household, 28, followed by Mary, 40, keeping house, followed by Nancy, 22, without occupation, and lastly John, 1. Obviously Mary can't be his Mom, at only 12 years age difference, and Mary obviously isn't the head-of-household, but Nancy's age is closer to that of a wife. When James married Alice, he was a widower, thus, at 40, Mary is more likely to be his wife, as portrayed by the census. A John beal is married to Victoria Roach on May 27, 1890 in Henry Co., Va., and his Mom is given as Nannie Beal, but Dad listed only as Beal; this bit of detail moves Nancy to James' likely 1st wife.
